| Abstract: | Adequate nutrition of infants is very crucial to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria. Malnutrition in infants can lead to future physically and cognitively challenged infants that set them behind throughout life time. Undernourished infants have lower resistance to infections, a less resilient immune system, and are more likely to die from common childhood ailments. One of the four strategies recommended by WHO, UNICEF (2005) is fortification of infant complementary foods for use after six (6) months of exclusive breastfeeding. |
| Description: | Complementary food is the food given to infants after exclusive breast feeding for six (6) months (UNICEF 2005). Around six (6) months of age, the mother’s breast milk may not provide adequate calories and nutrients for the child’s growth (Oyarekua 2011). Introducing solid foods before an infant is six months of age may interfere with the child’s ability to take in adequate amounts of nutrients and calories (WHO 1989). |
