Authors: Adio, Gboyega; Thomas, Ogunmodede
Abstract: Information from available data shows that disaster occurs in the form of earthquakes, landslides, heat-Wave,droughts,cyclones,hurricanes ,floods and volcanoes.Between 2000 and 2008,an average of 50,184 people were killed every year by earthquakes, while floods displaced an average of 99 million people a year. The urban disaster in lran in 2003 left damage totalling US$500M,the South Asian Tsunami of 2004 affected seven countries including African and killed 226,408 people as reported by the World Disaster Emergency Committee. It also reported that about 950 million people who lived in urban slums worldwide catastrophic tendencies of natural disaster in the next ten years. These are the catastrophic Tendencies of Natural Disaster. It costs colossal loss ,irreparable damage to human lives and the environment. It is,therefore, pertinent to preserve information resources for national development, discussion making and national heritage during disasters by taking preventive measures,Disasters planning, contingency planning, write a blue print, specifying all programmes and actions ,and resources mobilizations to prevent Disasters from happening, it is also important to ascertain that regular checks of information centre buildings are carried out appropriately and the fitted equipment be maintained ,and the personnel be well -trained to handle disaster when it occurs.

A review of biological deterioration of library materials and possible control strategies in the tropics

Title: A review of biological deterioration of library materials and possible control strategies in the tropics
Authors: Bankole, Olubanke M.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the current state of research on the various
biological agents that could cause deterioration of paper materials and possible intervention
strategies against these biotic agents in the tropics.
Design/methodology/approach – Recent literature in the tropics is reviewed to gain insight into
the problems that confront libraries in the tropics as regards the biological deterioration of library
materials.
Findings – The paper identifies moulds as the most important biodeteriorating agents of library
materials. In addition to destroying, disfiguring and staining books, the moulds have been linked to
numerous adverse human health effects that fall into three categories: allergic, toxic and infectious.
The other biological agents include bacteria, insects and rodents. The important insects in tropical
environment are cockroaches and termites. The warm humid tropical conditions and dirty
environment trigger/promote biodeterioration processes and make book deterioration to be more
pronounced in the tropics than in the temperate regions.
Research limitations/implications – Physical visits to the libraries were not carried out and the
conclusions reached were based on evidence from scientific literature on the subject in the tropics.
Practical implications – A very useful source of information on how to curb the menace of
biological agents against the destruction of library materials in the tropics. These include training
programmes for library staff on conservation and preservation of library collections, the creation of
awareness on the issue among library users, the adoption of good house keeping practices and
modification of storage environment to make them unsuitable for the biodeteriogens. It is
recommended that libraries and archives in tropical countries should have preservation guidelines
and integrated pest management teams and should also cooperate with scientists in relevant
disciplines to be able to find lasting solutions to the problem of biodeterioration of library materials.
Description: This paper looks into the neglected area of biological deterioration of papers
which is the main information carrier in libraries. It provides very useful and practical suggestions
that libraries in the tropics could adopt to tackle the menace of biological agents.

Title: Impact of Orientation Programme on University Freshmen: The Example of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria
Authors: BUSAYO, ISAAC OLUWADARE
Abstract: The study surveys the impact of orientation programme on university freshmen at the
Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. A sample of two hundred
questionnaires was administered on the freshmen across the four Faculties of the
University namely: Agriculture, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences and
Science, with a response rate of 197, representing 98.5%. The findings revealed that
orientation was educative, enlightening and interactive and it allowed for question
and answer opportunity. The results further showed that direct contact and
familiarity with the Principal Officers of the university is ensured while
accommodation and other challenges of freshmen are addressed. Orientation
programme/tours equally allow for the familiarity of freshmen with the institution.
As to whether orientation was a waste of time, 193 respondents (96.5%) disagreed
while 4 respondents (2%) agreed. Likewise, on whether orientation should be
cancelled, 195 respondents (97.5%) said no while only 2 respondents (1%) said yes. In
like manner, 192 respondents (96%) claimed that orientation talks/speeches motivate
and encourage freshmen but 5 respondents (2.5%) disagreed. However, 193
respondents (96.5%) opined that orientation should be held consistently annually for
freshmen while 4 respondents (2%) were against this opinion/option.
Recommendations were made as appropriate in line with the findings to enhance and
sustain orientation programme in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Title: LITERACY LEARNING SPACES, STRATEGIES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE INFORMATION AGE: THE ROLE OF LIBRARIES IN CREATING AND ENHANCING LITERACY-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Authors: EMEKA CHRISTIAN UZOMBA
Abstract: This paper examined literacy learning spaces, strategies and opportunities in the information age, with the
view of identifying the roles of libraries in creating and enhancing literacy-friendly environment for
national development. The findings of this study should guide both the children and adult learners on how
best to adopt new strategies to learning, and also welcome them to various opportunities that literacy
provides in our contemporary society. It will also equip the librarians to become part of the learning
community and, experts in information management. The study was guided by four objectives and four
research questions. A descriptive survey design was adopted in this research, with population of fifty (60)
staff selected randomly from three different universities. The instrument used to generate data is
questionnaire and the data generated was analyzed using frequency tables and percentages. It was found
that there are various strategies of literacy learning available in the information age such as: identifying
problems and seeking appropriate solutions, decoding and comprehending information from multiple
sources, understanding the meanings and contexts of words and symbol systems, participating in audio-
visual conferences, responding to e-mails and working in a virtual environments, etc. The major roles of
libraries in creating and enhancing literacy-friendly environment include providing free and equitable
access to information for all, identifying user needs and communicating solutions, providing information
on community issues such as health, employment, continuing education and local history, and offering
relevant and attractive reading materials for all ages and all literacy levels. The major challenges found
are inadequate funding of libraries, poor power supply, inadequate professional staff, low knowledge of
handling of ICT facilities in the library and inadequate proper training. Nevertheless, a solution was
proffered such as adequate funds should be provided by libraries, stable power supply, training
workshops, conferences, seminars for the librarians. It was also suggested that libraries should extend
their services to the rural and disadvantaged communities, and also be trained on good handling of
information technologies.

IMPORT OF USER EDUCATION IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA:

Title: IMPORT OF USER EDUCATION IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA:
Authors: BUSAYO, ISAAC OLUWADARE
Abstract: Thousands of candidates seeking admission to tertiary institutions in Nigeria, particularly, those seeking admission, to (he universities are school certificate holders, fresh from (lie various secondary schools with little or no knowledge of how the university system operates. Thus, such candidates when eventualy admitted into the university needs to be acquainted with the university norms, custom and culture; particularly, the library and its holdings hence, the need for user education in academic libraries. When users are introduced to the library and its resources early enough, particularly the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti that is just in its 200level, the possibility misuse or abuse or damage of materials would be minimized to the of barest minimum if not completely eradicated. Therefore, when library materials are judiciously used and jealously guided, such material would last long and stand the test of time, serving both the present set of students and those who would be admitted in the nearest future. User education in libraries, particularly in academic libraries no doubt, remains a panacea for the longevity of library resources.
Description: Students of Nigerian higher education, particularly, the academic libraries, are being inducted to explore the library and information service in different ways so that they can be in a comfortable position to consult their required sources of information easily and conveniently. Now-a-days, students’ community of institutions of higher learning face difficulties in retrieving pertinent information because of their poor library use education, thus leading to a state of less use of information sources and poor appreciation of library management. In this context, it is very crucial to impart user education programmes for the patrons of academic Libraries.

Title: SHELVING,SHELF READING AND CHALLENGES OF SHELVING STAFF IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN EKITI STATE, NIGERIA
Authors: BUSAYO, ISAAC OLUWADARE
Abstract: This study takes a look at shelving, shelf reading and the challenges faced by shelving staff in four (4) academic libraries in the government owned tertiary institutions in Ekiti State, Nigeria. These institutions are the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti and the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti. A questionnaire was developed and used to elicit data from the various respondents in the institutions covered by the study. Sixty (60) copies of questionnaire, that is fifteen (15) copies per institution, were distributed to the identified shelving staff in each case. Federal University, Oye-Ekiti turned-in fourteen (14) copies of filled and useable questionnaire, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti turned-in ten(10) copies, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti fourteen(14) copies and College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti twelve (12) copies. The total response rate was 50 out of 60, representing 83.3%. The results show that majority 49(98%) of the respondents see shelving as inevitable in library practice and 27 respondents (54%) claimed that shelving was neither tasking nor rigorous. However, 29 respondents (58%) saw the need for the employment of additional shelvers, 26 respondents (52%) frowned at users’ arbitrary retrieval of books from the shelves, coupled with the frequent disorganization of shelves as opined by 45 respondents (90%); while 30 respondents (60%) hammered on users’ boycott of library catalogue in retrieving materials among other challenges identified. Recommendations were made for improvement as appropriate.
Description: Nigeria has a number of states, federal and private universities associated with academic libraries. Likewise, there are a number of polytechnics and colleges of education all associated with academic libraries to provide literature support to aid learning, teaching and research for the parent institutions. Nigeria’s university system is been supervised by the National Universities Commission(NUC), a parastatal body under the Federal Ministry of Education; while the National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) supervise polytechnics
and colleges of education respectively.
