Title: The Role of Statistics in Sustainable Development and Good Governance in the Nigeria 7th Republic
Authors: ABATAN, Sunday Matthew
Abstract: The decadence in the Nigerian economy, and the lack of good culture of governance of the previous administrations brought about the great revolution experienced in the just concluded presidential election in Nigeria. As a result of this event, the All Progressive Congress (APC) emerged as the winning political party, hence the landslide victory that gave birth to Nigeria’s 7th Republic (2015-2019).
This paper aimed at demonstrating how the Nigerian 7th Republic can meet the yearnings of the populace through utilization of reliable and accurate statistics in Nigeria.
Descriptive analysis was adopted to connect the links. One of the major findings of the paper is that the 16years old Nigeria’s democracy has little to show for it.
The paper therefore recommends refocused, truly independent and coordinated arms of government to reduce the menace of corruption in Nigeria in order to achieve a sustainable development.
To meet the expectation of the masses, the government should pursue good governance not just on paper but in reality, with facts from statistical data from previous governments which can be use to evaluate their achievements/ failures2016-03-09T00:00:00ZThe Roles of Statistical Software in Data Analysis

Title: The Roles of Statistical Software in Data Analysis
Authors: ABATAN, Sunday Matthew; OLAYEMI, Micheal Sunday
Abstract: As quantitative research grows, application of statistical software (SS) becomes a more crucial part of data analysis. Researchers are experiencing a transition from manual analysis with paper to more efficient digital/electronic analysis with statistical software (SS). It identifies the prerequisites of producing world-class studies by using modern SS solutions. SS has contributed immensely in improving not only in demography studies and social investigation but also among other professionals’ researches in Nigeria and the world at large.A cross-sectional survey of 5 lecturers each were selected from 8 departments in the two faculties in Oye-Ekiti campus and were given questionnaire base on their availability and interest. A total sample size of forty (40) academic staff were selected but thirty (30) eventually responded which comprises fifteen less experienced staff with (0-5yrs) and 15 more experienced staff with (6yrs and above) as well as 10 non-response. The small sample size was due to few lecturers in some departments as at the time of this study. Data were analyzed using SPSS package.A univariate and bivariate analysis was done and findings of the study revealed that impact of statistical software on research results give Mean (M) =4.80 and Standard Deviation (SD)=0.41, on a (1-5) Likert scales with 80% Strongly Agree that SS has positive impact on their research result. Respondents category and running analysis without SS shows mean (M) =2.27 and Standard deviation (SD)=1.37 on a (1-5) Likert scales with 66% admitting that they cannot run analysis without SS. Some SS are suitable for some kind of analysis than others for instance, while SPSS,STATA, SAS MATLAB and R are 100% suitable for ANOVA, Eview, SAS STATA, R and MATLAb are 100% suitable for time series analysis. Furthermore, STATA, SAS, Eview, MATLAB and R are 100% suitable for different kind of regression analysis among others. In FUOYE, while SPSS has 92.9% knowledge and usage, others have usage and knowledge as follows; STATA (57.1%), SAS (15.4%), MiniTab (0%), Ms-Excel (76.9%), MATLAB (28.6%), R (0%), Epi-info (16.7%), and PSPP (8.3%). The paper concludes among other recommendations that academic staff/researchers should improve in their SS workshops training and further recommends integration of SS application in academic curriculum just like other compulsory courses. More so choosing statistical software packages to learn should be based on suitability of the software for all possible analysis you may wish to be analyzing.2014-08-08T00:00:00ZHIV/AIDS and family support systems: A situation analysis of people living with HIV/AIDS in Lagos State

Title: HIV/AIDS and family support systems: A situation analysis of people living with HIV/AIDS in Lagos State
Authors: ADEYEMI, Oluwagbemiga
Abstract: Current statistics about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria do not reveal the broader social and economic
impacts of the disease on the family. The study therefore primarily aimed to address the socio-economic effects of
HIV infection on individuals and their families. The study was carried out in Lagos State. In-depth interviews
we
re
employed to collect information from 188 people living with HIV/AIDS through support groups in the
state, while four focus group discussions were conducted to elicit information from people affected by AIDS
about the socio-economic impacts of HIV/AIDS on families in Nigeria. From the survey, among people living
with HIV/AIDS, 66% of females and males were in the age group 21-40 years, while 10% were older people
above 60 years of age. Findings revealed that as HIV/AIDS strikes at parents, grand parents are assuming
r
esponsibility for bringing up the children of the infected persons and the orphans of those killed by the virus. It
w
as striking that some of the older caregivers could not meet the requirement of these children. They are often
forced to work more than they would have, or borrow in order to cope with the needs of these extra mouths.
Some of the infected people have sold their properties to enable them to cope with the economic effects of the
virus, while their children have had to drop out of school, since they could not afford the school fees and otherr
elated expenses. It was suggested that PLWHA should be economically empowered with adequate medical
treatment, in order to reduce the impact of the disease on the family2007-01-01T00:00:00ZDeterminants of Concordance and Discordance Reporting of Contraceptive Use among Couples in Nigeria: Evidence from NDHS

Title: Determinants of Concordance and Discordance Reporting of Contraceptive Use among Couples in Nigeria: Evidence from NDHS
Authors: Odusina, Emmanuel Kolawole; Akinyemi, Akanni; Bisiriyu, Luqman
Abstract: Sexual behavior and contraceptive use dynamics within marital union presents a very complex and dyad interpretations. Among the complexities is the possibility of couples’ sexual fidelity to each other, infidelity of either of the partners or both partners. Secondly, are the couples’ approaches to other marital derivatives including fertility and contraceptive use. The analysis examined the determinants of concordance and discordance reporting of contraceptive use among couples in Nigeria with a view to understanding factors in concordance and discordance reporting of contraceptive use. The analysis utilized the 2008 NDHS couples recode dataset. The data were analyzed using Kappa Statistics and multinomial logistic regression. The results showed that age, education, wealth index, residence, fertility desire and fertility preference were significant factors predicting concordance reporting of contraceptive use (P<0.05) while work status, wealth status and fertility preference were significant factors predicting discordance reporting of contraceptive use (P<0.05). The analysis concluded that couples concordance reporting of contraceptive use is important in fertility control and in addressing the scourge of HIV/AIDS and other STIs in Nigeria.2015-01-01T00:00:00ZAlone in the Void: Getting Real about the Tenuous and Fragile Nature of Modern Civilization

Title: Alone in the Void: Getting Real about the Tenuous and Fragile Nature of Modern Civilization
Authors: Paul C. Sutton
Abstract: It is estimated that roughly seventy billion human beings have lived out their
lives on planet earth. It is very unlikely that any of the seven billion currently enjoying this
planet will be living out the rest of their life any place else. Nonetheless, many of our
movies and much of our literature envisions easy space travel that is scientifically
unrealistic. On July 24th, 2012 Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy, wrote
an op-ed piece in the New York Times titled: Alone in the Void. This article posited that
humanity (Homo sapiens) lives on a planet that is, for all intents and purposes, alone in a
vast empty space. Reader comments to this editorial ranged from people who were very
confident we were destined to colonize other galaxies to people who had little faith that
humanity would even exist on the earth one hundred years from now. The reader’s
responses mirror dominant and minority world views of economic theory. The dominant
neo-classical economic paradigm is optimistic and growth oriented with faith in
technological solutions to pressing social and environmental problems; whereas, the
minority paradigm of ecological economics posits a need to move toward a steady state
economy governed by the laws of thermodynamics as the preferred path for human
progress. I side with ecological economics regarding what collective choices will result in a
better future for humanity.
