THE PHILOSOPHY OF BASICS AND FRAGMENTS IN PLAY-DIRECTING: CIRCUS OF FREEDOM SQUARE PRODUCTION AS PARADIGM

Title: THE PHILOSOPHY OF BASICS AND FRAGMENTS IN PLAY-DIRECTING: CIRCUS OF FREEDOM SQUARE PRODUCTION AS PARADIGM
Authors: OLOWOLAFE, FRANCIS ADELODUN
Abstract: The essence of drama is communication and this communication must be done
in a manner that the audience will understand because they are the one will
communicate to through the drama that we perform. In communicating this
message, the director must understand the nature of his audience. It is these
understandings that will prompt him in using the best style that will enable
them decipher the message of the performance. If otherwise, the message will be
lost. Basics and Fragments is one of the styles that a director can use to interpret
his message to the audience. The philosophy of Basics and Fragments is to
detach the audience emotion from the performance they are watching so that
they can watch critically and be able to relate what they have seen in the theatre
to their society which is what is what Bertolt Brecht clamours for; and this is the
reason why Berltolt Brecht's Epic Theatre is the theoretical framework of this
work. Against this backdrop the director need to understand the level of
exposure of his audience to the theatre so that he will know if they are familiar
with the style he wants to use and maybe it will communicate the message to
them well. This research work will look into the performance of Bode
Sowande'sCircus of freedom square which adopted Basics and fragments as the
directorial style. This work will use interview and library materials as the
method to look into this philosophy, to know if the message was well delivered,
and if not, what the challenges are.

THE PLAY DIRECTOR AS A TEACHER: A STUDY OF RASAKI OJO, BAKARE’S DIRECTING TECHNIQUE

Title: THE PLAY DIRECTOR AS A TEACHER: A STUDY OF RASAKI OJO, BAKARE’S DIRECTING TECHNIQUE
Authors: OLUGBENGA, , COVENANT BABATUNDE
Abstract: Theatre practice in Nigeria has dwindled in great degree just as the culture is fast dying, and the situation leaves many theatre practitioners in a state of joblessness and redundancy. In spite the numerous reasons are accountable for this joblessness and redundancy. However this research hinges on the need for leading directors to adopt the director-teacher approach, which engenders impartation, as a preferred technique in the interest of the survival of the theatre. Using the analytic investigation approach, this research shall examine the “directorteacher” technique with some select works of Rasaki Ojo Bakare; a seasoned Nigeria
director. The research has it that a good teacher- director has no specific directing techniques; they apply techniques needed for each situation. A good teacher- director will
produce more director expert than any other Director. Findings also made it know that Theatre can only come back to its state if the directors produce good plays that the people can relate with well on stage.
Therefore, the study recommends that theatre directors should adopt the director-teacher
technique in working with the cast and crew, so that they can replicate themselves in the
production team, while preparing for a production. By so doing, there will be an increased manpower base upon which theatre can suitably survive and thrive.

Authors: OGUNWUYI, OMOBOLA ALICE; IDOGHO, Agofure Joseph
Abstract: In spite of the introduction of the use of computers, laptop, e-learning, and availability of internet
facilities in contemporary education, Primary school pupils specifically still find it difficult to
assimilate what the teachers are teaching them; because the modern day teachers still continue to
operate under the traditional method of teaching without applying any participatory method such
as creative dramatics that involves the pupils participation in the classroom teaching and learning
process. This traditional method of teaching does not give room for the creative development of
the pupils instead making pupils inactive in the classroom because it discourages pupil’s
participation and there is no room for pupil’s autonomy in the classroom. This research work
thus surveys the instrumentality of creative dramatics as a classroom experience and as an
effective educational tool in contemporary education. It carefully considers its meaning, scope,
objectives as well as its effects on the children in all areas of their development. This study
adopts qualitative research methodology in its data gathering and analysis using ethnographic
research design; participants observation
Description: A creative dramatic workshop was carried out with the

Title: SEMIOTICS OF SET DESIGN IN OLA ROTIMI’S “THE GODS ARE NOT TO BLAME” PRODUCTION
Authors: MOJISOLA ALICE, BALOGUN; Adeoye, Michael A.
Abstract: Set design spices up theatrical performances especially as a significant requirement. The
contribution of set design to the overall success of performances on stage is inevitable as
demonstrated in available literature. In spite of this contribution, set design has been
neglected by many theatre practitioners, a problem which has necessitated this study.
Therefore, this research looks into the semiotics of set design in the theatrical production
of Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not To Blame as directed by Rasaki Ojo Bakare. It is
basically meant to project the effect of design in theatrical production. This study uses
Participant Observation and In-Depth Interview methods of data collection. Relevant
literary materials will also be consulted to help elucidate the subject matter. Through
these relevant methods, this study stresses out the relevance of set design to any theatre
production, as it is hinged on the theory of semiotics as perceived by different scholars
such as John Locke, Umberto Eco and Ferdinard Dessasure.
Using qualitative method of data analysis which is applicable to the arts and humanities,
this study concludes that, the use of set design in the theatre is inevitable in theatrical
productions because this research has found out that set design tends to attract the
audience more than any other aspect of a production. Set design also depicts the crust of
the play text with the use of physical visual images in theatre as a major factor which
influences the rate at which the audience understands.

Abstract: The new media otherwise known as the social media is the focus of this study. It is an impact
assessment research using the students of Federal University Oye-Ekiti as its study sample. The
social media platforms included in this project includes; Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and
Blogs. Youths, especially undergraduates are the target of the study. The research explores how
much quality time youths spend on social media interactions. The method used in carrying out
the research is the opinion poll method. It is observed that students spend most of their time
chatting and browsing online rather than pay attention to their studies. The research submits that
if the recommendations made receive adequate attention, youths will waste less time on
irrelevant media platforms to the benefit of their education and future career.
Description: Summarily in this essay, the researcher has made an attempt to as objectively as

Title: ROLE INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES AND THE NIGERIAN ACTOR: PETER FATOMILOLA IN FOCUS
Authors: ALOMI, TOLULOPE AYOBAMI; Tayo, Isijola
Abstract: The problem of poor acting has bedeviled the quality of production content of the Nigerian movie industry, and too
many ambitious Nigerians jump into acting without understanding the demands. This project which focused on the
acting technique of a successful Nigerian actor is a qualitative study shall employ the interview methodology to
investigate the techniques of the actor under study. The research deduce that there is the need for all talented actors to
be exposed to trainings and capacity development programs that will refine their raw talent. Among other things the
researcher recommends that Nigerian actors should endeavor to re-event their techniques by being innovative enough
and offer fresh innovations to the acting profession
Description: The issue of poor-self documentation in the sense that actors don’t document their work again. They find it
difficult to give an account of the total films they have featured in. A good actor should be able to give a
definite account of the films he/she has done. Peter Fatomilola was unable to tell the number of stage plays and
even the number of screen plays he has acted in over the years. He was just guessing and even his guess was not
certain and this gave the researcher a lot of problem because the researcher was unable to give a precise number
of films he has featured in and was unable to make a straight statement about the number of films. Peter
Fatomilola is unknowingly using Stanislavski’s system because all his acting styles and techniques are what
Stanislavski’s techniques state. Going into the world of the character and putting yourself in the world of the
character, forgetting the situation you are facing before going on set, forgetting your family and friends and
concentrating on his acting.

Title: POLITICAL THEATRE AND CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: FINDING MEANINGS IN RASAKI OJO BAKARE’SONCE UPON A TOWER.
Authors: ADESUNLOYE, OYINDAMOLA SAMUEL
Abstract: A persisting trend in Political theatre in Nigeria has remained a careful evaluation and a critical analysis of the vicious Politicking and corruption perpetuated by the Nigerian
political elites in the Nigerian polity, questioning the status quo for a general social change. However, this vicious politicking and corruption has demeaned and maimed the society, thus creating a dichotomy between the oppressor and the exploited. It is on this note that, Once
Upon a Tower is analysed in this study to highlight and discuss the various odious politicking and selfish corruption of Nigerian leaders especially within the educational sector and its effect on the majority as well as radical social transformation that the exploited class
clamours for. Therefore, this research submits that Political theatre can be employed as a tool to prod out the various issues of corrupt politicking in the society, by questioning the status quo and socially preaching change and proffering solutions if need be as demonstrated in Once Upon A Tower. The study concludes that corruption which is an offshoot of dangerous politicking, has maimed our society drastically especially within the
educational sector. Thus this study recommends that corruption and dirty politics will continue to retard the society and debase the Nigerian society, until the oppressed rise up to challenge the statusquo, thereby taking the bull by the horns, to liberate themselves from the
inhumane treatment they are subjected to, change will only be a mirage.
