Title: META-FUNCTIONS OF GENDER STEREOTYPES IN ABIMBOLA ADUNNI ADELAKUN’S UNDER THE BROWN RUSTED ROOFS
Authors: OMOREGIE, OLUWATOSIN OLUWASEUN
Abstract: Gender Stereotypes are the general overview about the roles both male and female
play. The stereotypes do not essentially reflect reality; rather they represent
culturally shared beliefs about what particular individuals should be like. This
study investigates the meta-functions of gender stereotypes and the representation
of gender roles in the text “Under The Brown Rusted Roofs” using Michael
Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistic as the theory with a special focus on its
transitivity systems: process and participants; interpersonal: mood and modality
and textual: theme and rheme. The text is analysed through purposive sampling of
excerpts that reflects instances of gender roles and stereotypes in the text. It was
discovered in the text that men are seen to be active, superior, head of households,
decision makers and also demonstrators of social power while the women are
submissive, emotional, powerless, and occupy a subordinate position at all levels
of social life under the control of men. Thisresearch will be of great benefit to
linguists, individuals and general public. It will promote effective and active
participation of both genders and their contribution to the development of the
society.

Title: A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE OF SATIRE IN WOLE SOYINKA’S THE TRIAL OF BROTHER JERO
Authors: OKWO, CHARITY SANDRA; Oyedokun- Alli, WasiuAdemola
Abstract: Literary works have symbiotic relationship with issues that gain currency in any given
society. Wole Soyinka’s The trial of Brother Jero is a satirical play which has received
several appreciations both linguistically and literarily. This study is a stylistic analysis of
the language of satire. Taking cognizance of earlier works on the subject matter, this
work is unique in its scope and depth. Unlike Jonathan Swift’s A modest Proposal and
Chaucer’s The Canterbury tales which merely talk about the ills in the England Ireland
respectively, and its effect on its citizens. This work describes satire not only by
presenting the ills in the contemporary Nigerian society but it makes use of symbolic
characters to depict different sectors and classes in the society. Also Wole Soyinka
reveals the ills and allows the audience to pass their judgments on the declining state of
the society. With this in mind, stylistics features such as irony, hyperbole, sarcasm,
invective and repetition will expose the instances of satire and its interpretation. The
study will employ the theoretical framework of speech act.
Description: The uniqueness of this study
is that its analysis will not entirely be linguistic or literary in nature but it will present the
interface between language and literature. More so, conclusions so far from this study
will serve as a springboard for writers and researchers.

Abstract: Using unguarded conversation among the Igbo multilingual students, this study
aims to examine the styles of code-switching and code-mixing among the Igbo
multilingual students in the school. Participants included the Igbo multilingual
students from both campuses- Ikole and Oye. The examples of code switching and
code-mixing are analysed qualitatively as to their function within a multilingual
discourse. By the use of questionnaire, information was elicited from the
participants about their multilingual background and reasons for their choice of
code for code-switching and code-mixing during conversation. The details
afforded from these linguistic biographies are integrated into the analyses to
determine how these can facilitate and explain the styles of the students’ code
alternation.

Abstract: Words perform actions. Language and in fact words have different functions and according to the speech act theory of J.L Austin, utterances both written and spoken have a particular effect it should have on the listener. Many researchers have written on political campaign speeches and a universal trend in them - propaganda in Nigeria. The researcher feels that the related works previously done on the field of enquiry did not probe into the underlying intentions beneath the speaker’s mind neither did they succinctly address the effect the utterances make on the audience- the electorate. This makes the undertaking of this research important. The researcher also observed that the perlocutionary thrust of language use on the aspirants and the electorate with regard to campaign of calumny (propaganda) is yet to be fully studied. With this in mind, this study uses the Speech Act theory of J.L Austin to show that language has a great effect on both the voters and contestants as observed during the 2015 general election in Nigeria. This research takes into consideration most especially eight selected writings of party loyalists of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressive Congress (APC) during the 2015 presidential election. Data collected for this research spanned from the buildup of the campaign process in August 2014 to the eve of the elections in March 2015, feared in many quarters as the last Nigeria would ever had.

Title: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ORAL ENGLISH PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN ADO- EKITI, EKITI NIGERIA
Authors: FATUNBI, OLUWASEUN ESTHER; Victoria, Ogunkunle
Abstract: Speaking is one of the language skills that enhances students’ performance in the English language. This
is because speech is the primary manifestation of competence in language use. This study examines the
differences and similarities in the spoken English of private and public schools in Ado Ekiti. The study
aimed at examining the Oral performances of the students and identifying the factors affecting Oral
English performance in schools. Error analysis is the theory used for analysis. The data were obtained
through the use of questionnaire purposively administered to the students from selected schools. Interview
and observation were also used. The data were analyzed by transcribing the words pronounced by the
students. The four stages of error analysis were used to analyze the errors identified. The reports of the
questionnaire were used to identify the similarities and differences in public and private schools. The
findings revealed that public secondary school students in Ado-Ekiti perform better in Oral English than
their private secondary school counterparts also in Ado-Ekiti. It is also discovered that private secondary
schools in Ado-Ekiti have a shortage of Oral English teachers while public secondary schools have more
proficient teachers. However, both private and public secondary schools lack teaching aids for Oral
English.Secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti need to focus attention on Oral English teaching so as to
improve the performances of the students in the English language. Also, private schools in AdoEkiti

need to employ competent Oral English instructors to handle the teaching of Oral Eng lish.
It is recommended that private school administrators should provide creative and dynamic Oral
English instructors. In addition, prominence should be given to Oral English.Governments at all
levels should provide language laboratories and materials for use in secondary schools because
it helps to reduce Mother tongue interference in Oral communication.
Description: The comparative study of Oral English performance of private and public schools in Ado-Ekiti,
Ekiti has been examined in the study. The onus of good performance of students in Oral English
among private and public secondary school lies heavily on the teachers but their ability to
properly carry out the job is being hampered by a number of fact. Also Oral English does have a
great influence on the academic achievement of learners as well as factors related to teaching and
learning such as methodologies of teaching and learning, student participation in class activities,
teaching and learning materials.

Title: A LEXICO-SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF REMI RAJI’S SEA OF MY MIND
Authors: YUSUFF, OMOBOLANLE; Inya, B. T.
Abstract: Appropriate, effective and efficient use of language is the core of any type of communication.
Larger constituents of communication are formed by the combination of words which cannot be
separated from language. Each word, phrase, clause, sentence and discourse occurs in different
structure, level and class, and all hold different meanings and functions which make them
uniquely different from one another, especially when they are used in a particular context. Thus,
lexico – semantic level of language analysis deals with the study of word and its meaning. This
study examines lexico-semantic features of selected poems in Remi Raji’s Sea of my mind and
how they have achieved meaning and intended interpretations. Context is considered in
analyzing the poems since it is believed that all linguistic expressions are realized from an
existing situation and environment. This study adopts Systemic Functional Linguistics as the
analytical theory.
The data for the study were obtained from Remi Raji’s Sea of my Mind and the lexico-semantic
features are presented using quantitative and qualitative methods. It was discovered that the
lexis/words in the selected poems were carefully chosen to make meaning and to convey the
intention of the poet. The study also gives further evidence that language is a meaning-making
resource and that context of situation is important in the understanding and interpretation of
literary works
Description: This research shows that antonyms, synonyms, hyponyms, word formation processes that include
affixation, compounding, collocation, miscollocation, are found to be predominant in the
documentation of the selected poems in Sea of my mind and all these contribute towards the
identification and realization of meanings in the poems.

Title: INVESTIGATION OF THE STRUCTURE OF NOMINAL GROUPS IN TELL MAGAZINE EDITORIALS
Authors: AKINYA, IDOWU; Amaechi, Adaku C
Abstract: This study is an investigation of the structure of Nominal Groups used in the editorials of Nigeria
news magazine. The data used for the study were editorials of four editions of the Tell Magazine.
The data of this study were analysed based on the ideational and experiential meta-function types
of Nominal group. Analysis of the editorials showed that the editor of the Tell magazine used, at a
point in time, one of the four structural types of nominal group. Analysis of data also showed that
the H- type nominal group was the most prevalent while the HQ- type was the least used. Analysis
of the experiential meta-functions showed that the determinative elements were the most frequent
modification elements. Analysis further showed that the structural type often used in the editorial
of Tell Magazine differs with the other write-ups and reason for this was explained. Finally,
findings were discussed and it was recommended that: writers of editorial pages of news
magazine should adopt the use of H nominal structure to appropriately pass across their editorial
messages, newspaperor magazine that hasnot been making use of editorial pages should adopt
such in their publication and finally studies should be carried out as regards the topic which will
make use of editorial of soft sell magazine or other areas of the news magazine beside editorials.
Description: This study evolves from a keen interest on the structures of the nominal groups and how they
have been used in the editorials of news magazine. Thus, the study has looked into the
nominal group structure in the editorials of Tell magazine to find out how this magazine has
conformed or otherwise with the four structural types of nominal items.

Fighting War With Words: A Lexico-Semantic Analysis of Dasylva's Songs of Odamolugbe

Title: Fighting War With Words: A Lexico-Semantic Analysis of Dasylva's Songs of Odamolugbe
Authors: Inya, Blessing Titilayo
Abstract: In the wake of post-colonialism and the resultant neo-colonialism
in some African countries, some wars are not fought with guns
but words; one of these is war against corruption: corrupt leaders
and corrupt practices. Some of these warriors are journalists,
writers, poets, etc. one of whom is Ademola Dasylva in Songs of Odamulogbe. Songs of Odamulogbe is a collection of poems
that is preoccupied with combating corrupt leaders and corrupt
practices, and inciting other compatriots to arise to the challenges
facing the poet’s country, Nigeria. There have been both literary
and linguistic-based studies on Ademola Dasylva’s Songs of
Odamolugbe; but worthy of note is Dasylva’s use of language,
particularly, lexico-semantic features embedded in the text.
However, no attention has been paid to this aspect of language
use in the text. Therefore, drawing on the resources of Systemic
Functional Grammar, this study attempts a lexico-semantic
analysis of select poems in Dasylva’s Songs of Odamolugbe. The
poems are selected based on their political themes. The lexicosemantic

features are identified and discussed. The study reveals
that language use in the text is not arbitrary; rather, it is for
specific purposes like correcting, criticizing, inciting, eulogising
in nostalgia a once good country etc.
Description: the chapter is a study on lexico-semantics of a Nigerian poetry.

Abstract: Let us carry some proverbial owls to Athens or coals to Newcastle, that is, revisit issues that have

issues by themselves are so powerful and important, so urgent and difficult that we must never tire of

be the defining factors for our survival as a species. Why do we need the humanities as an academic

both inside and outside the academy? Most universities in this world somehow acknowledge the
importance of languages, literatures, music, art history, philosophy, religion, and education. But when
it comes to basic financial issues, the humanities tend to be the first victims of budget cuts, if we
disregard specifically liberal arts colleges that focus on the humanities above all or exclusively.

Authors: Yong Zhi
Abstract: The enlightenment from Zen’s perspective is the experiences of action that
reveal a horizon of new consciousness. This event of enlightenment is the process of action
rather than the outcome of action. Therefore, actions are not just the means to
enlightenment but the very core of it. The actions of enlightenment from Zen’s perspective
cannot be adequately described and explained in logical terms. Unlike most other Buddhist
schools, Zen does not engage in extensive philosophical discourses; its classical literatures
are mostly artistic in nature, consisting of collections of koans, poetry, and paintings, etc.
The ten ox-herding pictures of Zen Buddhism are recognized as the classical illustration of
Zen’s spiritual journey, as it vividly depicts the practice of Zen in a poetic and
metaphorical way. They present a visual parable of the path to enlightenment in a narrative
sequence of a boy’s searching, seeing, wrestling, riding, and transcending of the ox.

Abstract: Among the key issues that in recent decades the researchers have focused on is the
relationship between ethics and media and interaction between them. Nowadays,
interaction between these two realities, two texts, two institutions, and both cultural and

Description: Among the key issues that in recent decades the researchers have focused on is the
relationship between ethics and media and interaction between them. Nowadays,
interaction between these two realities, two texts, two institutions, and both cultural and
technological elements has occupied the mind of the researchers. The confluence of these
two different perspectives of sociology, sociology of knowledge, communication, ethics,
and culture has been discussed and contemplated. Through the interaction of the ethics and

Title: Making Nothing Happen: Yeats, Heidegger, Pessoa, and the Emergence of Post-Romanticism
Authors: James Corby
Abstract: Through close readings of the work of two major poets of the twentieth
century—W.B. Yeats and Fernando Pessoa—this paper identifies and attempts to make
sense of an important shift in European modernism away from a broadly Romantic
aesthetic toward what might be called “post-Romanticism.” Taking its cue from W.H.
Auden’s “In Memory of W.B. Yeats,” where having stated that “poetry makes nothing
happen” he asserts that it survives as “a way of happening,” and drawing on the philosophy
of Heidegger and Jean-Luc Nancy, this paper argues that this shift from Romanticism to
post-Romanticism hinges on a deep metaphysical reconceptualization of poetry understood
as poiesis. In light of this reassessment of the aesthetics and philosophical affinities of
poetic modernism, it is argued that post-Romanticism should be understood as offering a
modest, salutary, phenomenological re-acquaintance with our involvement with the
everyday world, in sharp contrast to the transcendental ambitions of the Romantic aesthetic
that preceded it.
