Authors: IJEMARU, GERALD KELECHI; OLAITAN, AKINSANMI
Abstract: As the name implies, “A Concise Approach to Electromagnetic Fields and Waves” is an outgrowth of the lecture notes prepared for Electromagnetic Fields and Waves I & II. Intended primarily as a text book for students at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, it is expected that the book will be useful for research workers too. It provides a thorough treatment of the theory of electrodynamics, mainly from a classical field theoretical point of view, and includes such things as electrostatics, electromagnetic waves and their propagation in vacuum and in media.
With the parameters and terms that made up the text clearly defined, this book is based on classical electromagnetism that deals with the study of static charges and their electric fields, the magnetic field developed by motional charges and the electromagnetic wave that treated the dynamism of electron in rapidly time-varying condition.
The book – “A Concise Approach to Electromagnetic Fields and Waves” consists of eight chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to electromagnetic fields and waves. This chapter x-rays the basic concepts about electromagnetics, the discovery of electromagnetic field, Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic spectrum and the fundamental characteristics of EM waves. Chapter two looks into a review of vector analysis, which includes vector algebra and vector calculus, while chapter three presents Electrostatics and its applications as well as charge distribution in a conductor, Coulomb’s law, electric field intensity, and electric potential. In chapter four, there is a review of EM laws in the integral form, which houses Gauss’s law, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law, magnetic field in and around a current-carrying conductor, conduction and displacement current density, derivation of Maxwell’s equation from Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law and Gauss’s law. Wave equation derived from Maxwell’s equation is presented in chapter five, while chapter six looks into divergence and stoke’s theorems. This chapter comprises time harmonic waves, poynting vector (s), media of plane waves, wavelength of wave in free space, wave propagation in free space and in perfect dielectric, etc. Transmission line is presented in chapter seven and lastly, chapter eight contains miscellaneous problems and their solutions.
This book tries to build a good background for the targeted students and set them to the context of electromagnetism without over assumption. To this end, a student of electromagnetism, studying for the basic principles of and building blocks for communication and power system engineering, will find this text an invaluable material and relief for hitherto dreaded but all important course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Description: This book – “A Concise Approach to Electromagnetic Fields and Waves” covers the required breadth of the subject matter as prescribed by NUC curriculum for engineering students of Universities and Polytechnics. The area on fields particularly opens the study into field theories needed in engineering for proper understanding of basic electrical engineering ideas.
An in-depth background of Electromagnetics as applied to wave theory and practice has been laid. The book is recommended to students not only in electrical and communication engineering but also in physical science.

Authors: IJEMARU, GERALD KELECHI; ADAMU, MURTALA ZUNGERU; YADUMA, SANDRA; BABARINDE, ADEDAYO KAYODE; OLUSUYI, KEHINDE OLUWAFEMI
Abstract: This research work deals with the design and construction of an automatic triggered bell ringer circuit. Several previous attempts have been developed on intruder alert and a motion detection system, complex systems that operate excellently well. The automatic triggered bell ringer circuit integrates knowledge of these previous models and utilizes more readily available components. It also introduces the use of two sensors, thereby increasing its sensitivity. Major components used in the work are the Force and Light sensors, sensors that depict the concepts of pressure and light resistivity/conductivity respectively, and a laser beam directly projected permanently on the light sensor’s surface. A force exerted on the Force sensor triggers a buzzer alarm and likewise, an obstruction in the path of the laser triggers the buzzer alarm. Once there is pressure exerted on the Force sensor, the resistance tends to infinity and voltage dropped across it biases the diode and transistor and the voltage reaching the buzzer triggers it. Likewise, the resistance of the light sensor tends to infinity when in darkness and the voltage dropped across it also biases a diode and transistor and triggers on the buzzer alarm. The work has been tested and seen to have a higher sensitivity, and is much cheaper than its counterparts.

Authors: IJEMARU, GERALD KELECHI; OLEKA, EMMANUEL UCHENDU; NGHARAMIKE, ERICMOORE TOCHUKWU; NJOKUOCHA, KENNETH IKECHUKWU; UDUNWA, AUGUSTINE IKENNA
Abstract: As LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks proliferate and network traffic increases, LTE operators face the problem of interference. Because LTE spectrum is limited, most operators deploy single frequency networks to maximize capacity. However, while single frequency networks increase spectral efficiency, they also increase the potential for interference. Interference is highly unpredictable and depends on various factors such as channel conditions, traffic from other terminal and noise. Interference occurs between various equipment in a heterogeneous LTE-A access network and is a threat to the technology of wireless network. Hence, this research work seeks to analyze the various techniques for combating interference in LTE–Advanced access network per unit area using different combination of methods. Network-based interference mitigation solutions are not yet available to address the interference problems of today’s LTE networks. However, Terminal-based interference solutions are available today as they offer operators a powerful weapon to combat interference. The introduction of Femtocell to users has also made interference mitigation scheme achievable. The Femtocell interference mitigation technique mitigates the interference between network components such as Macro-cell and Femtocell in a heterogeneous LTE-A access network. The work also emphasizes the importance of heterogeneous network in a wireless communication and the basic sources of interference and their mitigation techniques in this kind of network. The implementation of all the suggested mitigation techniques and power control formula as explained in this work has been proposed to target the performance of heterogeneous LTE-Advanced access network. This, as a result, will improve the signal quality of the received signal, and end users will experience higher throughput and better service continuity, and LTE operators will improve coverage and increase the capacity of their networks.

Abstract: This research work seeks to analyse the performance of a two-phase induction motor using dynamic model based on MATLAB. The 4th order Runge-Kutta was used for the solution of this dynamic model. The modelling and simulation will be strictly for Two-phase induction motors used in low power applications. Measured and simulated results would be discussed and correct mitigation techniques would also be recommended .Future work within the scope of this research work would also be discussed. With the growing concerns about low-cost operation and efficient use of energy, Two-Phase induction motors have gained interest in low-power applications, especially for domestic or commercial applications where a three-phase power supply is not available. Abstract: Most of the contemporary Information systems are based on the Database technology as a collection of
logically related data, and Database Management System (DBMS) as a software system allowing the users to
define, create, maintain and control access to the database. The process of constructing such kind of systems is
not so simple. In this paper, A database management system was developed to manage the staff data of the
National Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe, Kogi State, Nigeria. The system developed is called Employee
Management System. It consists of functionally related GUI (Graphical User Interface) and a database. The
application programme is between the users and the database, where the data is stored for reliability,
flexibility and functionality. The programming tool includes Microsoft visual studio 2010 platform and C-
Sharp (C#) as the language. It involves a mutual development of application program and a database. The
software was tested and found effective for the company. It is recommended for large organizations and
establishments.

Abstract: The aim of this research work is to carry out fault analysis of 11KV distribution power system. Electric power
is an essential facilitator for sustainable development of the modern nation state. While Nigeria is reported to suffer from
severe shortages of electric power the condition of some of its newer constitutional units are unknown. In this work, electric
power infrastructure and energy availability is studied for Ado-Ekiti, the principal economic and political hub of Ekiti State.
During the study, the condition of all relevant equipment for power distribution at the 11 kV level was assessed. Power
availability was also considered by collecting necessary data that had to do with energy supplied, faults and other outages. It
was discovered that the distribution lines were in a rather poor state with as many as 25% of the poles not meeting a condition
of "goodness", 33% of cross-arms being broken or unsatisfactory, about 10% of the insulators defective and almost 40% of
the span not complying with standards. Hence this work presents a research on fault analysis of Ado Ekiti distribution
power system.

Abstract: Electric utilities have a need to keep a comprehensive and accurate inventory of their physical assets, both as a part of normal service
provision (extending the network, undertaking maintenance, etc.) and as a part of their obligation to inform third parties about their
facilities. Complexity of electrical distribution power system is a good reason for introducing new information technology - GIS (Geographic
Information System) that carries out complex power system analyses (e.g., fault analysis, optimization of networks, load forecasting) in
acceptable amount of time. In pursuance of an understanding of the electricity distribution network, the Geographic Information Technology
approach was adopted. GIS provides a better scenario in the management and monitoring of electricity distribution facilities so as to provide
adequate power supply for the resident sector of the economy. The aim of the project is to generate a geospatial model for electricity
consumers and facilities to provide a better understanding towards effective distribution and conservation of electricity. This involves
locating and mapping all the facilities involved in distributing energy to the end-users. This modeling involves the collection of both the
geometric and attributes data of all the entities identified including that of the consumers. The GIS technology adopted involves the use of
computer based wares. A Hand-Held GPS was used in acquiring positional data. These data were formally integrated into computer based
software for several analyses. The database generated contained information on the facilities and residential consumers. Series of spatial
query operation was carried out to provide answer questions that lead to effective management and monitoring of the distribution facilities.
Further analyses such as determining the trend/pattern of the rate in consumption of energy by the households within the study area were
carried out. Areas of short-comings were identified and proposed locations/sites were generated in the service areas that needed new
facilities. The end products are maps, tables and project report. It was however ascertained from the results that GIS is a competent and
effective tool for managing/monitoring electricity distribution network. It also provides a better understanding towards effective
distribution and conservation of electricity. In this context, the wrapping up shows that GIS makes map revision and digital mapping easier
and some useful recommendations were proffered.
